Mexican Oregano

Mexican Oregano is similar to Mediterranean oregano and marjoram, but with a much more robust, pungent flavor than it's more delicate European cousin. Native to arid, dry areas of Mexico, South American and the American Southwest, this woody, hardy, drought tolerant plant is used prolifically in Mexican, Latin, Tex-Mex and Cajun cooking. Because of its robust nature it stands up well to chilies and the heat of these dishes where Mediterranean oregano would be too delicate and surely overpowered. Add to sauces, soups, broths and stews for authentic southwestern flavor or to chilis, beans, poultry or beef. Most north, central and south American recipes that call for oregano without specifying a variety are almost always referring to Mexican Oregano. If you find the flavor a bit too bold for your liking our Greek Oregano will substitute quite well.
