Harvested from high-altitude fields swept by hot, dry winds in Afghanistan’s Herat province, this Persian saffron shares the same prized terroir as Kashmir but surpasses many global standards in purity, potency, and aroma. Known for producing some of the highest quality saffron available, Afghan farmers hand-harvest each delicate stigma from the crocus flower using traditional techniques passed down for generations. Our saffron has been laboratory tested to meet ISO 3632 standards and scored an exceptional 236 for color strength, aroma, and flavor, placing it in the highest possible grade of saffron available anywhere in the world.
To fully unlock its deep, golden hue and rich flavor profile, we recommend gently toasting the threads in a dry pan to release their essential oils, then crushing them with your fingers or a mortar and pestle. In recipes with minimal liquid, pre-soak the threads in lukewarm water and stir them in at the end of cooking to preserve their intensity.
